Property Tax Deferment Process

• Pre-Authorized Withdrawals (PAWS) Program

  If you’re on the PAWS program and wish to defer your taxes, you will need to cancel your PAWS. Depending on the timing of your cancellation, you may not have taxes left outstanding to defer in the current year.

  In order to cancel participation in the PAWS program, either:

  • Complete the cancellation form and email it to taxclk@penticton.ca, or
  • Attend the Property Tax counter at City Hall, 171 Main Street, Penticton
• Ensure your property tax account is in good standing

  Before applying for the program, you must pay all arrears, penalties and City Services.

  Please ensure by the July tax due date that you have completed these items:

  • Paid any arrears and penalties you owe
  • Paid any City Services on your tax notice
  • Claimed your home owner grant with the province
• Confirm you are qualified

  There are two tax deferment programs you may qualify for:

  Regular Program

  You may qualify for the Regular Program if you’re: 

  • 55 or older during the current year
  • a surviving spouse of any age, or
  • a person with disabilities

• Apply online

  Applications are submitted online. 

  Follow these steps to apply.

  To get started, you’ll need your roll number (also called a folio number or account number) found on your property tax notice or on your BC Assessment notice issued each January.

• Renew your loan agreement each year

  When you apply online, you can choose to set up automatic renewal. If you don’t set up automatic renewal, you’ll need to re-apply each year.

  You will also need to ensure that each year you arrange to pay for your City Services and apply for the home owner grant, as neither of these are able to be deferred as part of this program.
