Strength. Fitness. Self defence skills. Personal discipline. Whatever your reason, martial arts classes will whip you into physical – and mental – strength.
You’ll find a variety of studios and teachers offering martial arts and self defence classes in Penticton. Here are some to try, starting with the newest location, which opened this month.
Skoden Martial Arts
Skoden Martial Arts (pictured above) just opened its doors in early May on Main Street, offering jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing classes for all ages.
“Most people get into it for fitness but are quick to realize how beneficial it is for self defence. I strongly believe jiu-jitsu is the best form of self defence because you’re continuously practising the moves to help you in a dangerous situation,” said owner Marlan Hall, who was a signed professional fighter in 2019. “Both jiu-jitsu and kickboxing are also great workouts.”
Yes, you can learn MMA skills there, but the gym is also “very family-esque,” he says. “It’s for anybody. We have three-year-olds in here and I also do private lessons with someone who’s 73 – and he’s awesome. I get people who, when they first start out, they’re pretty intimated, but after a week they’re absolutely loving it.”
