• About the Replacement

  Kiwanis Pier has been a valued part of Penticton’s waterfront since it was first constructed in 1984 at a cost of approximately $45,000. Over the decades, it became a recognizable landmark and a popular place for residents and visitors to gather and enjoy views of Okanagan Lake.

  After more than 40 years of exposure to the elements, the pier experienced significant water damage and reached the end of its lifespan, making it no longer safe for public use. While estimates indicated it would cost approximately $1.8 million to fully replace the pier at its original length, available external funding and donations were limited.

  In response, City Council approved a fiscally responsible project budget of $800,000 to redesign and rebuild the pier in a way that balances cost, durability and long-term community benefit.

  The new pier has been designed to be more resilient and better suited to current conditions. Its raised structure improves its ability to withstand high water levels, while accessibility upgrades ensure it can be enjoyed by a wider range of users.

  The project also includes improvements to the surrounding area, such as:

  • New landscaping with 21 trees and more than 100 shrubs
  • Upgraded pathways to improve accessibility and connectivity
• Costs Involved

  The City originally planned to replace the Kiwanis Pier to match the existing overall footprint, but rising costs of materials, supplies and labour surpassed the budget originally approved, estimated to cost roughly $1.8 million.

  Given the many financial pressures the City is facing and the volume of projects requiring funding, City Council has approved a project budget of $800,000, which would support construction of a pier to roughly half the size, as well as minor landscaping works in the surrounding area to address accessibility concerns.

  While the City invited community contributions in 2025 to restore the pier to its original length, the community response was minimal.
