From local farmers to artists, shop owners to restauranteurs, we thank you.
Love Local is about showing our appreciation for all that you do. And it’s more than that. It’s about being aware of how we spend our dollar – and to keep it local wherever possible.
As we adapt to the new normal, here are eight tips to shop, eat and think local.
Buy Local Food
Here in Penticton right now, we’re so lucky to have access to fresh local produce. Visit the Penticton Farmers’ Market on Saturdays from 8:30am to 1pm to nab food straight from the farm and local producers.
You can also check out Visit Penticton's list of Penticton-area fruit stands.
And thirdly, you can contact the farms directly or check out their websites or Facebook pages. Some, such as Plot Twist Farms , offer food boxes full of produce delivered weekly to your door.
Buy Local Beer and Wine
Pop in to your favourite craft brewery or any of the dozens of local wineries to pick up beverages to go. And with the City of Penticton extending its Responsible Alcohol Consumption initiative until October, you can also enjoy your drink outdoors at select beaches along Okanagan Lake (from 12 noon to 8 p.m. daily).
Order Out or Dine In
Many local restaurants are offering dine-in services again. Also, ordering takeout has never been easier. Businesses have adapted during the pandemic, such as posting their menus online.
But before dialing your local food delivery service, try phoning the restaurant directly instead to place your order. Some even offer discounts for pickup. Considering restaurants pay additional fees to use delivery services, this ensures your money stays here.
Think Before You Click
Buying online is easy-peasy. But before gravitating to the obvious options, take a moment to see if you can find the same product available here in Penticton. Many local shops now offer online ordering, and if not, you can phone in your order for no-touch pickup.
Show Your Appreciation
A little thanks goes a long way. For small businesses, a five-star Google review can make an owner’s day. These reviews also help encourage other people like you to choose that shop next time. Take a few minutes to write some kind reviews on Google or Yelp to those businesses you love.
Purchase a Gift Card
Not only do they make great gifts, but you’re putting your local dollar where your heart is.
Book Your Hair or Nail Appointment
Those hair cuts, colours and manicures may be long overdue. Pack your mask and enjoy some ‘me time.’
Keep Your Subscriptions
These have been hard times for local gyms, studios and other places that rely on monthly subscriptions. Soon, registrations will begin for dance studios and other enrollment starting in September.
