Going for a picnic isn’t just about eating outdoors. It’s about spending quality time with people you care about, the sun on your face, and unwinding in nature. It’s about making memories and eating delicious food.
Starting May 10, the City of Penticton’s Economic Development department is launching Picnic-ton, a Love Local initiative aimed to support local businesses. The purpose of this picnicking program is to inspire people to order takeout to enjoy at local parks and beaches.
What is Picnic-ton?
Here are the highlights:
- 36 extra picnic tables will be distributed throughout local parks in addition to the permanent tables, providing plenty of outdoor eating opportunities.
- A new interactive map will plot out local parks as well as participating restaurants, so it will be easy to see where picnic benches are located – and places nearby to order your food or drinks.
- Participating restaurants will be handing out free ‘picnic packs’ to customers who order takeout food or drinks from their establishment.
- Penticton's responsible liquor consumption program is returning to designated outdoor spaces soon. City Council will consider adopting the bylaw on May 4, which would allow the consumption of alcohol at designated parks (Okanagan Beach east of Power Street, Rotary Park, Okanagan Lake Park, Marina Way Park and Skaha Park).
The concept for Picnic Penticton is the result of recommendations from the COVID-19 Safe Restart Task Force to support local businesses. This program aims to build on the momentum gained from the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce’s Dine Out & Give Back program as well as the Downtown Penticton Association’s Take-Out to Help-Out program.
