Eckhardt Avenue Upgrades

This $5.5-million, multi-year project involves replacing aging underground infrastructure and adding traffic safety improvements to create a “complete street” upgrade that will serve residents for many years to come.

This project requires a road closure of Eckhardt Avenue, which will remain closed for the remainder of the 2026 school year. The overall project is anticipated to be completed in fall 2026. Watch this webpage for updates or sign up for email updates direct to your inbox.

Traffic Changes

Access to Eckhardt Avenue is now closed from Main Street. The closure is required to allow for excavation and large equipment to upgrade water, storm and electrical infrastructure. In addition, multiple traffic safety improvements will be installed, including a flashing crosswalk beacon at Ellis Street and continuous sidewalks and bike lanes along the corridor.

March 31, 2026 Update: As construction progresses into the intersection of Main Street and Eckhardt Avenue, motorists and pedestrians should prepare for traffic detours and potential delays.

What to expect:
•    Directional lane closures and delays are expected from now through Monday, April 6 as surface work continues. Movements through the intersection may be restricted, and access to Main Street may be limited at times.
•    Access will be reduced to one lane on Main Street during portions of the work. Please follow posted signage and traffic control personnel and avoid the area if possible.
Kiss and Go Access:
•    The “Kiss and Go” drop-off area on Main Street may be congested or inaccessible at certain times. Where possible, consider alternate drop-off locations, including the Library and Jermyn Avenue.
Pedestrians:
•    Pedestrian access may change throughout the project. However, temporary pedestrian detours will be in place—please follow posted signage.

Crews will return later this spring to complete final road restoration and traffic signal upgrades. More details will be shared at that time. Residents or businesses with questions can contact the City’s engineering and public works department at 250-490-2500 or engineering@penticton.ca.
